Lead Testing
Lead Testing Results Summary
The Mount Sinai School District completed required lead testing of water outlets in all school buildings using a state-approved independent laboratory, in accordance with New York State Department of Health regulations.
Testing identified a limited number of outlets with lead levels above the current New York State action level of 5 parts per billion (ppb). These results are primarily isolated to specific rooms, with the most significant concentrations occurring in one room in the middle school, where multiple fixtures are present.
Immediate Actions Taken
Please be assured that no affected outlet remains available for drinking. Upon receipt of the results, the district took immediate action at all impacted locations:
- Potable outlets exceeding 5 ppb were removed from service.
- Sink faucets needed for handwashing were clearly placarded for non-drinking use only.
- Non-potable outlets were also placarded and restricted.
- All student drinking water access points remain safe and available.
Summary by Building
Elementary School
Four classroom and faculty room outlets tested above 5 ppb.
All were removed from service immediately.
Middle School
Several outlets in the main office and one classroom area tested above the action level.
- One outlet was removed from service.
- Multiple outlets within a single room were placarded for non-drinking use only.
This concentration supports the conclusion that the issue is localized and likely related to prior repairs or materials that do not meet current standards.
High School
Two kitchen-related outlets tested above 5 ppb.
- One was removed from service.
- One non-potable outlet was placarded for non-drinking use only.
Ongoing Remediation and Facilities Planning
In addition to the immediate safeguards already in place, the district is reviewing long-term remediation solutions as part of its facilities planning process. This may include fixture replacement, permanent removal of older outlets, and continued upgrades to modern, filtered water stations, in accordance with New York State Department of Health guidance and best practices.
