June, 2018

Dear Mount Sinai Student,

Congratulations on successfully completing another school year! If you are entering grades five through twelve in September 2018, you are required to select and read one book from the following links (Reading List 5-8) , (Reading Lists 9-12) , or any book suggested by the Comsewogue or Port Jefferson public libraries.

Once again this year’s assignment allows you choice from a wide variety of authors whose works you should be encouraged to investigate. These books are available at your public library or can be purchased if you choose to do so.

After finishing the book, write a one-page response: Briefly explain why you chose the book and then offer some reaction to it. This might be a personal, creative or academic response—you decide. The important thing is that it demonstrates the thinking that you did as a result of the reading. Whatever you do, do not summarize the book!
These must be in your own words, not printed information from the Internet.

Bring your response to class on the first day of school.
Your thoughtful response to the book and your ability to discuss it in class will be one of the first impressions your new English teacher will have of you next year. Come prepared to think, talk and possibly write about the book you read.

Please keep in mind that if you are enrolled in an Honors or Advanced Placement (A.P.) English class next year, please disregard this, you will be responsible for a different assignment. If you have any questions or need assistance please feel free to call me at 870-2892

Sincerely,

Frank N. LaBianca
